Congratulations to Joe for
receiving
the
ABA Ludlow Griscom Award Outstanding Contributions in Regional
Ornithology in 2010
for his great work in California!
These notes are based
on Joe Morlan's class lectures, but any errors or omissions are
mine. Page numbers refer to the National Geographic's bird guide,
fifth
edition.
Sometimes notes are on another day than we actually discussed a
bird,
e.g. when we started on a bird one week and continued the next time
all
my notes are in one of the weeks.
I will continue to post notes as
I get them ready.
I'm very
sorry
about being hopelessly behind on posting notes.
I have not stopped this work. I'm still keeping up with raw notes
and
some background research as best I can. Editing my notes into a
readable form is very time consuming. I will do it eventually, but
reality unfortunately has shown that I'm getting notes ready to
post
rather later than sooner.

I'm sorry I still do not find the time to write notes. Here is a summary of the
status and distribution of the different subspecies of Lesser
Black-backed Gull.

A remark about my usage of plumage terminology in
ducks:
I follow the findings of Peter
Pyle's
excellent
work on duck molts,
with eclipse=alternate plumage and bright=basic plumage in most
ducks
(with the exception of Ruddy Duck).
See also my essay on molt
and
plumage terminologies that I included in my notes for May
7th,
2009.
